Unusual Color Combinations:
Be bold with fantastic, earthy colors. Browns, gray-blues and rich plums can be used to wonderful effect. Here, you can see how Oscar de la Renta pairs vibrant red and purple hues for a truly stylish look. I also love the idea of a golden blouse combined with a loden mohair sweater and a "tweedy" wide legged trouser. Make sure to wear the trousers with a high heeled boot for a long and lean Marlene Dietrich inspired silhouette. If you only have two solid colored pieces (top and bottom) try incorporating a modern necklace or belt that has lots of texture. |

Skinny Belts:
The waist is defined this season in a big way, and skinny belts can give you the lady like look of the 20's with a modern twist for today's woman. I love the look of a skinny contrasting belt over a structured blazer over a dress (Diane Von Furstenberg). Or, to make it not so constructed, you can wear a thin long cardigan with the same look. However, the flowing look is not for everyone. If you're on the shorter side, you can still do the blazer/cardigan with the belt but keep the dress underneath a straight sheath. And don't forget the heels/boots to give the outfit a youthful flair! Pumps/mary-janes/t-straps are best with this style. Classic boots with a chunky heel would also work - and would prevent the outfit from looking matronly. To further insure that it doesn't seem dowdy, don't be afraid to add bold accessories. |
Wide Belts:
Wide belts work wonderfully for everyone! For women who have a smaller waist to hip ratio, it accentuates their slimmest part. Meanwhile on women with a straighter figure, it really gives you some shape. If you're less than 5'4", stick with belts less than 2 1/2 inches. However, if you're taller, and have a long torso, you can go crazy with the huge array of wide belts. I especially love the corset like belts that you can put over everything from flowing dresses to blouses as seen here at Alice Temperley. If those belts are wide they cinch you in and hold you, but you can still eat and breathe. YSL makes a wonderful array of this style of belts, as does the very well respected milliner Eugenia Kim (who has a new line of accessories for Coach this season) who designs a less expensive version. Don't be afraid to show off your waist this season! |

Structured Bags:
Structured, lady-like bags are here to stay. Last season, the camera case bag was widely photographed, and its popularity will continue into fall. For a perfect example, consider last season's Balenciaga bag, which was done in a combination of cream and raspberry. They've done another version of the bag for the fall in light blue and black. The different colors and textures promise to carry through this season and into the future, as people are tiring of monochromatic bags. While some people might imagine that a dual colored bag will make coordinating their bag with their outfit more challenging, I think it can actually make simple outfits look considerably more fresh and exciting. With the right bag you can just go with the basics - paired with some of your favorite accessories - and still look magnificently chic. |
Jewel Toned Velvets:
Fall is here and who wouldn't want to be wrapped up in luxurious velvet? But don't confine yourself to black or even brown. That's so expected! Jewel toned velvets are elegant and fun. Try emerald, amethyst and sapphire for something different this season. You can find the velvets anywhere from J. Crew to Gucci. A colorful velvet blazer can be paired with jeans and a great vintage pin/belt. Alternatively, you can do YSL's "Le Smoking" with a gem tone Ferragamo velvet suit with sparkles as seen here. Holiday parties, here we come! |
