Spring Dos and Don'ts:
Going through all of my fashion magazines this month, I cannot imagine what all of you must be thinking, as even I'm a bit confused about the spring looks. There are so many choices, but a lot of them are very difficult to wear and unflattering to the body.
However there are a few great spring pieces that can each work in many different ways.
What to get: Loose, short floral dress; one-of-a-kind belt (check out your local vintage market); strappy, chunky heels; oversized men's-style blazer; cropped leather jacket; Sgt Pepper-style band jacket.
What to avoid: Jumpsuits; cropped tops; pajama pants; harem pants. |

Belt That Dress:
Back in November, I wrote about how I belted my own Jean Paul Gaultier gown for the Black Ball (which even got John Mayer's attention). Now the trend is really hitting home. There were so many belted gowns on the Oscars' red carpet, most notably Sarah Jessica Parker's gorgeous princess Dior gown accessorized with a wide belt. Although a gown usually signals 'formal' or 'stuffy', adding a belt ups the cool factor and makes you look relaxed, not matronly. Try this look even on a cocktail dress. If you have a straight figure like me, then a wide belt gives the illusion of a waist; if you have curves, then you really should be belting everything to emphasize them! |
Cropped Pants:
A new casual look I like is to take skinny jeans, chop a bit off the bottom, and roll it up to just below your calf with a slim cuff no more than an inch. It's very flattering, since you're showing the skinniest part of your leg, and as the weather warms up, you'll want to show some skin. There is a Marc Jacobs suit this season that features cuffed, cropped pants, so you can even use this trick to update slacks you already own. Do not think of these like capris - it's a much more sophisticated and sexy look. Since you are showing a bit of leg, strappy shoes with some detail around the ankle will look really cool. You can also experiment with the height of the heel, but keep in mind that chunky heels and platforms are not only trendy this season but also easier to walk in! |
