ASK MELISSA REVIEWS BROADWAY

Broadway Now Playing

I am a theater fanatic, but have felt the pinch of the recession.
Can you suggest any affordable Broadway shows?

Don't let the recession keep you at home with a bottle of cheap red wine and Sex and the City
reruns. (Though that does sound fun). Why not checkout one of these Broadway Shows during
the Spring season. Here are some Ask Melissa favorites that offer affordable tickets.

EXIT THE KING

Life is but a stage in this brilliant production of the classic Eugene Ionesco comedy about a 400-year-old king who has been informed that he will die when the curtain goes down. Academy Award Winners Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandon star along with Lauren Ambrose in this hilarious, relevant revival.

REASONS TO BE PRETTY:

The opening scene will make the most vicious fight you've ever had with your mate seem like a polite debate, and from there drama, surprises and thought-provoking dialogue don't let up. Acclaimed as the best new American play of the season, this Neil Labute ("In the Company of Men" and The Shape of Things") play revolves around a woman who finds out that her boyfriend has described her as "regular" looking. Insider Tip: Be sure to read the playwright's note in the playbill.

GOD OF CARNAGE:

In his first major role since the Sopranos went off the air, James Gandolfini knocks it out of the park in one of the season's biggest hits. The satiric comedy is about two Brooklyn couples who come together to discuss a tooth-shattering fight between their sons. Their civilized composure quickly deteriorates, and they become little better than playground bullies themselves.

9 TO 5:

The economy may have you working hours more like 5 to 9, but you can relieve some of that stress at this charming office comedy. Yes, you run the risk of getting the hit Dolly Parton song stuck in your head for days, but that's no reason to miss the musical adaptation of the popular 80s movie about three female co-workers who imprison their sexist boss.
